The International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships (AFS Convention) currently prohibits the use of harmful Organotins in anti-fouling paints used on ships.

Reduction of Carbon Intensity on International Shipping

The goal of the new requirements of Chapter 4 of the Annex VI of the MARPOL convention is to reduce the carbon intensity on international shipping, working towards the levels of ambition set out in the Initial IMO Strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships, as per IMO Resolution MEPC.304(72).

MARPOL ANNEX VI – Fuel Oil Sampling Points

The 75th session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 75) approved amendments to MARPOL Annex VI on procedures for sampling and verification of the sulphur content of fuel oil including definitions of MARPOL delivered sample, in-use sample and on-board sample. The MARPOL amendments published under Resolution MEPC.324(75), as can be found attached, and shall enter into force on 1 April 2022.

Revised Guidelines for the Maintenance and Inspections of Fixed Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishing System

IMO vide Circular –MSC.1/Circ. 1318/Rev.1 has approved revised Guidelines for the maintenance and inspections of fixed carbon dioxide fire-extinguishing system which modifies paragraph 6.1.2 of the annex to introduce changes to the hydrostatic testing intervals for fixed CO₂ fire-extinguishing systems.

IMO’s MEPC 76: Summary of Outcome

The 76th session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 76) was held remotely with a limited agenda from 10 to 17 June 2021.

New Korean SOX Emission Control Area (SECAs)

From 1 September 2020, the South Korea government will implement mandatory SOx Emission Control Areas (SECAs) requiring the use of 0.1% sulphur fuel by ships in specified port areas. The South Korea government has also released a voluntary speed reduction program in the same ports.

ICS Guidance (R): Compliance with the 2020 ” Global Sulphur Cap” – Update July 2019

From 1 January 2020, in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI, the sulphur content of fuel oil used on board commercial ships trading outside sulphur Emission Control Areas (ECAs) must not exceed 0.50% m/m.

Sulphur Cap 2020 HSFO carriage ban will be effective from 1 March 2020.

From 1 March 2020, high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) cannot be carried in the fuel oil tanks unless the vessel is fitted with an approved equivalent arrangement.
